How to get MAME and Neo Geo games working on RetroPie seems to be one of the most popular queries online regarding RetroPie. However I cannot find any post that just explains what to do in simple terms.
I have struggled with this for ages and still the only game I can get working is DoDonPachi (International) using lr-mame2003 and the Neo Geo BIOS. Other games I try just will not work. I have seen suggestions for trying different emulators but either my RetroPie does not have them, they are listed with different names or they are associated with ROM folders that I don't recognise as being for MAME or Neo Geo games. An example of a game I cannot get to play is Radiant Silvergun in MAME (even though DoDonPachi in the same folder will play) or Metal Slug X which will not play from the Neo Geo or Free Bird or Arcade folder with any emulator. What am I missing? Thanks in advance. For MAME:.
Find a 0.78 MAME romset (archive.org has one). Copy the roms you want over to the mame-libretro folder. Copy the bios files in the romset over to the /home/pi/RetroPie/BIOS/mame2003 folder. Just copy them all if you're not sure what does what, doesn't take up a ton of space. Include the samples subfolder. Reboot Emulation Station and the roms will appear. For Neo-Geo:.
Find a Neo-Geo romset (don't use the MAME one, use 0.2.97.39 FBA thank you ). Find the Neo Geo bios (neogeo.zip file, should be in the romset), put it in the neogeo rom folder. Copy your Neo-Geo roms over to the neogeo folder and reboot like before to see them. If the Neo-Geo roms don't load, you have a bios for an older/different version of the emulator RetroPie uses TL;DR You need the right romset, and possibly the right bios files as well depending on the game. I am starting to get a grip on this; so I need to set the right emulator for a particular ROM yes?
Unlike say SNES games where different emulators give differing performance, instead I will either get working or non-working? So on the archive.org page for the 0.78 ROMset, can you tell me which ZIP file is the MAME set?
They are all abbreviations. I did download a Neo Geo BIOS set when I was first looking into this, how do I know which is the right BIOS for the Neo Geo emulator I am using? Thanks. It's more like you need the correct romset for the emulator Retropie uses. In this case it's generally mame2003-libretro and fba.
So on the archive.org page for the 0.78 ROMset, can you tell me which ZIP file is the MAME set? They are all abbreviations. It's a gigantic collection. I recommend downloading the torrent and using that to get everything (a little under 30GB I think).
Downloading zip by zip is insanity and you won't finish (and you need them all to unzip as a whole). I did download a Neo Geo BIOS set when I was first looking into this, how do I know which is the right BIOS for the Neo Geo emulator I am using? Seriously, that's how I did it. Find a full Neo-Geo romset and use the bios from there - if it works, great, if not repeat with a different romset.
So are you saying that (for example) there are different versions of the ROM for Metal Slug 6 and I need the one that works with mame2003? Which would be the 0.78 one. Or is it that as the ROM of Metal Slug 6 that is on emuparadise says it is 0.164, then I just cannot play that on my RetroPie? I'm fine with a limited game list as long as I can just get it working.
It seems weird that no one online has just given a simple explanation on how to set this up. A 30GB download is not really doable on my current bandwidth, I tend to just download the specific games I want and transfer them to my Pie (it also keeps the system easier to navigate when it does not have hundreds of games on there that I will probably never play). Thanks. I used different romsets for MAME and for Neo-Geo, and where I placed the folders means I used different emulators. Mame2003-libretro - I need to use 0.78 MAME roms with the appropriate bios files in the right place neogeo - I need to use FBA roms (can't remember the romset sorry, I think it was from second largest living bird paradise) with the correct bios in the neogeo folder (same as the games) A 30GB download is not really doable on my current bandwidth Just prioritize the roms you want and the bios folder, and set the other files to do not download. Should be less than 100 megs all in really.
I tend to just download the specific games I want Agree 100%, I try to keep each system at about 50-100 games. Download the roms you want from the 0.78 folder, put them in /home/pi/RetroPie/roms/mame2003-libretro Then copy the bios files from the archive.org romset into /home/pi/RetroPie/bios/mame2003. Just realized that I guess you need to download this seperately after looking at the 0.78 romset.
Neogeo Rom Collection
I have no idea where I downloaded it from. You likely won't need it. Then copy the samples folder from your 0.78 romset to /home/pi/RetroPie/bios/mame2003/samples Hope this helps. It's a bit of nightmare yes, but as soon as you get the fact that Retropie has set emulators, and it's all about finding the right roms and correct bioses (if applicable) things get easier. OK, I had one more go at this before I went to bed. I downloaded the 0.2.97.39 FBA ROMset and I just don't get it. The file was about 800MB, I used Keka to extract it but when I opened it it's just a bunch of zip files registering at zero bytes and some a readme file about patched ROMs that I have no clue what it is talking about.
Can someone just explain to me in basic terms what I am supposed to do? Every instruction I get for running Neo Geo or MAME ROMs seems to assume that I basically already know how to get it working. It's driving me crazy. I have been trying this all morning (ended up home from work after pulling a muscle in my back) and no dice. Archive.org only has a 0.2.97.38 set and when I extract it on Mac or Windows it says it is corrupt. I am downloading it again to retry. When I found a site that claimed to have downloads for individual ROMs that were 0.2.97.39, and I put them in the folders suggested, nothing.
Neo Geo Roms Mame
Why is this so difficult? There seems to be so much info about this online, but nowhere has just a step by step guide with links to ROMsets etc. That gets it working. It's like every discussion online about this goes from A to C skipping B. Yet still, inexplicably, DoDonPachi works for me. I put the ROMset from archive.org downloading just there and it is actually only 5.5GB which I can do. You have the wrong romset.
The 0.78 reference romset is 13.7GB I just need to make sure I put them in the right folders with right BIOS which may take a bit of trial and error. Only mame-libretro folder for the 0.78 romset. The bios files it needs are part of its romset. Games for windows live.
Neogeo folder uses a different emulator (FBA) and needs the FBA 0.2.97.39 romset. Again, the neogeo.zip it needs is in that romset. Mame2003 runs most of the neogeo games, though, but only from within its folder (/mame-libretro/). No trial and error needed. Arcade emulators require a specific romset. Get the right romset, and your game loads.
I think this is one of RetroPie's (or Emulationstation's) biggest problems. I love this project and have been tinkering with RetroPie for many months on and off to figure out how to best configure this thing. I'm considering contributing to the project as well. However, stuff like this should be automated, or there should be a more user-friendly way to possibly 'install' the more complicated ROM sets. Currently it takes hours of cross referencing files and moving files from one place to another just to get one MAME rom working. This seems so tedious that I can't get myself to spend the time to even start this process.
That is what led me to this post. Well for what it's worth I kind of don't mind how fiddly it can be as part of the reason I bought a Raspberry Pi in the first place was to learn more about computers.
My skills are not bad but when I was going to college I had a choice between computer science and sciencey science and I chose the latter but my interest in computers has only grown since then. My issue really is that I felt like no one has ever explained online exactly how to get Neo-Geo / MAME games working. From this post I finally gathered the following:. you need the Neo-Geo BIOS (although I already knew this). you need a version of the game ROM that works with the emulators built in to RetroPie (I did not know this). no matter what you do, some games will not work (I also did not know this) Since this post I have been making progress and have about 10 Neo-Geo / MAME games up and running. Lovin' me some DoDonPachi!
Hi Okay, so I want to play neo geo games like Metal Slug in Mame, and I have MAME4ALL 037b5 roms. Currently I just get the message 'required files are missing'. So I've been searching and it seems to be possible to play the games, if I just put a neogeo.zip-file the right place, right?
So I searched and found af neogeo.zip and put it directly in this folder: /home/pi/RetroPie/roms/mame-mame4all. But I must be doing something wrong, because it still doesn't work. Am I putting it in the wrong place? Or are there different neogeo.zip-files, so that I may require a certain one for the 037b5-roms (and if that is the case, can somebody help me find it?).
I hope you can help. I have googled a lot now, and there should be a neogeo.zip that works with the 037b5- mame roms. I've seen several post saying that they found one that works. Malayalam movie screenplay pdf free download. Only problems is they don't say where they found it! I've downloaded and tried 3 versions now (only reason I know they are different is the file size), with no luck. One of the pages I've seen specifically talk about my 037b5-set and that you should get a neogeo.zip file which is 853kb. But I can't find it!
Do you know if there is a place with several neogeo.zip-files/version? I seem to stumble across either the wrong ones or end up getting spammed on some strange websites. Said in: Thanks. Hmm, the neogeo.zip that came with my 037b5 set is 54KB (mslug.zip is 13.2MB) and works fine in mame4all-pi. The only way to really confirm you have the right set is via clrmamepro, i'm afraid.
